Carbotone® – Black-and-White Prints with the Distinctive Character of Carbon Pigments

With Carbotone®, we have created a dedicated online shop for high-quality black-and-white prints. Our focus is on FineArt prints produced with specially formulated carbon-pigment-based ink systems, developed for photographers who place particular importance on tonality, depth, and longevity in their black-and-white images.

Our Carbotone prints are based on the proven Carbonprint ink system from farbenwerk®. Depending on the desired image appearance, different tonal options are available – from the classic, warm character of pure carbon pigment prints to a significantly more neutral, natural black-and-white rendition.

Carbotone warm or warmneutral

Carbotone Warm is printed exclusively with carbon pigments. The natural tone of these pigments creates a pleasantly warm, classic black-and-white appearance with deep blacks and exceptionally fine tonal gradations.

For Carbotone Warm Neutral, the naturally warm character of the carbon pigments is balanced with a very small amount of carefully selected cool-toned pigments. The result appears significantly more neutral while retaining the distinctive character of a carbon pigment print.

Both variants are available on matte and glossy papers!

Selected FineArt-Papers

A high-quality black-and-white print depends on more than just the ink. That is why we combine Carbotone with carefully selected FineArt and baryta papers from manufacturers such as Hahnemühle® and Canson Infinity®.

Matte cotton papers create a particularly calm, velvety image appearance, while glossy and baryta surfaces provide greater brilliance, stronger contrast, and exceptionally deep blacks. The choice of paper therefore allows you to deliberately influence the character and visual impact of your image.

Und wenn Schwarzweiß wirklich neutral sein soll?

In addition to Carbotone, we will soon also offer ABW+ black-and-white prints on carbotone.de, produced with genuine Epson® pigment inks. These prints are created using Epson's Advanced Black-and-White mode and are intended for photographers who prefer a truly neutral black-and-white rendition without the natural warm tone of carbon pigments.

The “+” in ABW+ means that, unlike the standard ABW workflow, we use individually optimized tonal curves specifically adapted to the paper being printed. This allows the tonal values to be distributed more precisely across the available tonal range for an optimized black-and-white reproduction.

At carbotone.de, you will find all available tonal options, paper surfaces, and print sizes, along with further information about our specialized black-and-white printing service.

Es dauert noch etwas ....

Carbotone.de is currently under development and is expected to launch during the fourth quarter of 2026.
