High-quality black-and-white printing on FineArt paper with Carbonprint inks
High-quality black-and-white prints on FineArt paper are often associated with large, expensive photo printers. But there is another way: with simple Epson tank printers and the right inks, surprisingly refined results can be achieved.
In this article, I compare two Epson® models that were originally designed as office printers: the Epson ET-1810 and the Epson® ET-14100. Both printers work with only four color channels, yet in combination with Carbonprint inks they deliver durable and impressive black-and-white prints on FineArt papers.
Epson® ET-1810 – simple A4 printer with clear limitations
The Epson® ET-1810 is a very basic A4 tank printer. Its construction and materials are simple, which becomes particularly noticeable in the paper feed.
While standard papers are handled without issues, the printer shows clear weaknesses when using thicker FineArt papers. The paper often has to be manually assisted during feeding for the print to start. This may be acceptable for occasional black-and-white prints, but it is not very comfortable for regular FineArt printing.
Epson® ET-14100 – reliable A3+ printer for FineArt paper
In practical use, the Epson® ET-14100 plays in a different league. From the very first use, the significantly better and more reliable paper feed is noticeable.

Advantages of the Epson® ET-14100:
- Print formats up to DIN A3+
- Stable paper handling
- FineArt papers up to 315 g/m² can be printed without issues
- User-replaceable paper feed roller

| Especially when working with high-quality papers, this robustness pays off. The printing process remains controlled and relaxed – a decisive factor for reproducible results. |

Black-and-white printing with Carbonprint inks – surprisingly high quality
|
Despite their simple technology, both printers deliver very good black-and-white print quality. The combination of:
- four ink channels
- reduced driver settings
- Carbonprint inks
results in smooth tonal transitions, clean grayscale gradations, and long-lasting prints on fine FineArt papers.

ICC profiles for maximum print quality
To unlock the full potential of these printers, we have created specially optimized ICC profiles for black-and-white printing for many common FineArt papers.
These profiles are precisely matched to:
- Epson® ET printers
- Carbonprint inks
- different FineArt paper surfaces
and enable neutral, reproducible, and controlled black-and-white prints – without lengthy trial and error.
👉 All ICC profiles are available free of charge for download.
Conclusion: Which Epson® printer is better suited for black-and-white FineArt prints?
If you are looking for an affordable Epson® tank printer for high-quality black-and-white printing on FineArt paper, I clearly recommend the:
👉 Epson® ET-14100
Not because of absolute print quality – both printers deliver convincing results with Carbonprint inks – but because of:
- the larger print format up to A3+
- the significantly more reliable paper feed
- the overall more robust mechanics
The Epson® ET-1810 works.
The Epson® ET-14100 works reliably and stress-free – and that is exactly what makes it the better choice for demanding black-and-white prints.
